A New Comic Book in Honor of St. Francis

The Jubilee Year of St. Francis

In honor of the 800th anniversary of his death, 2026 has been named the Jubilee Year of St. Francis. This means it is a wonderful time to learn more about this much-loved saint, known for his love of the poor and creation. Before he became the saint depicted in so many images and garden statues, he was a young man who wanted to be a knight. Francis: Herald of the Great King, new from Voyage Comics, depicts his early life and the beginning of his ministry.

A Man in Search of a Mission

Francis: Herald of the Great King opens with Francis fighting in a battle between Perugia and his hometown of Assisi. He is captured and spends a year in prison, returning home an ill man. Even when his health recovers, he still feels something is missing in his life. He spends his time carousing with friends until he jumps at the opportunity to join the papal armies. He is eager to fight, but a series of dreams convinces him he must serve the Lord, the greatest king of all, so he leaves the army.

He tries to discern what God wants him to do. He gives all he has to the poor, serves the lepers who once repulsed him, and works to physically rebuild a church. When he sells his father’s expensive cloth to fund his efforts, his father publicly disowns him, and Francis gives up everything he owns, even the clothes on his back. Garbed only in a tunic, he sets out to live a life of poverty, preaching to anyone who will listen. Soon, others join him, forming a band of brothers on a collective mission.
