I recently had the opportunity to review the initial copy of Roughhouse Magazine, which is debuting on June 1st and is edited by Dominic Andres, son of Suzie Andres (author of Homeschooling with Gentleness and A Little Way of Homeschooling).
Roughhouse hearkens back to the classic days of boys’ magazines, such as Boy’s Own and older issues of Scout Life, and definitely has an old-time feel to it. Each issue is divided into three sections: History and Adventure, Science and Mechanics, and Games and Fun. The initial issue features articles on The Burning of the Philadelphia, A Prisoner in Vietnam, The Leper King in Battle, Should Men Read Poetry?, Life as a Highway Patrol Officer, How it Works – The Colt Revolver, and Understanding Latitude and Longitude.
There are also instructions for hands-on activities, such as building a duct-tape hammock and a Lego armored truck, creating a Caesar Cipher, playing three basketball games, two card games, and a pen-and-paper game. It concludes with a graphic comic of The Battle of Trafalgar.
The articles are interesting and well-written. Due to the subject matter and writing style, I recommend this magazine for boys ages 11 and up.
