Talking to Children about War

Talking to children about war is never easy. How can we explain violence or attempt to assure them that they are safe when they see scary images on television or hear people talking about current events?

When Will There Finally Be Peace: Answers to Questions about War, Violence, Refugees, and Reconciliation by Elisabeth Raffauf can help. This is a children’s book on a difficult topic. It includes quotes from children from war-torn countries and provides an honest and age-appropriate (best for ages 8 – 12) look at the difficulties of war.

It covers questions, such as: What is peace? What is a terrorist? What is allowed in war? Are soldiers afraid? How can we help? What can other countries do? How can wars end? What happens to a country after a war? It also discusses how to navigate situations when children in a different country come from areas at war.

While it is published by Paulist Press, it is not a faith-based book. However, it is a good way to begin discussions on a difficult topic. And, of course, we should always pray for peace with our families.
