The Crooked Court Jester and the Last Knight is a lovely picture book written by Susan Joy Bellavance and illustrated by Abdulahi Bonaya Boru designed to teach children about the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick as well as the gift of Divine Mercy.
The crooked court jester has spent his life entertaining people with his magic while also using his gifts to steal from them. But when he becomes deathly ill, the Knight of Compassion convinces him to call upon the King of Mercy, who blasts the shame and blame from the jester. With his sins forgiven, the jester feels free and is able to make his way to heaven.
The illustrations, with their vibrant colors and painterly style, complement the story well.
The Crooked Court Jester and the Last Knight would be a great read aloud to use when preparing for the Feast of Divine Mercy or anytime one wants to remind children about the power of God’s love and forgiveness.
