One of my goals for this summer was to complete The Essential Guide to Catholic Homeschooling. I finished it just in time! It was a project that has long been on my heart.
I started TodaysCatholicHomeschooling.com in 2013, providing information and inspiration for Catholic homeschoolers. I’ve always tried to share a wide variety of information on both the website and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/todayscatholichomeschooling), so that no matter what educational philosophy a homeschooler might follow or what stage of homeschooling they are at, they might find something of value. I’ve also tried to provide an honest view of homeschooling. It has many benefits, but it isn’t all rainbows and butterflies. Like parenting in general, there are good days and bad days.
In 2020, when the whole world was suddenly homeschooling, I hastily wrote The Crash Course Guide to Catholic Homeschooling to provide people with the basics they needed to feel comfortable homeschooling. I’ve always wanted to expand on that effort and write a more comprehensive guide to homeschooling. This is that guide. Within these pages, you will find information on why Catholics choose homeschooling, various educational philosophies, choosing a curriculum, developing a homeschool schedule, homeschooling children with special needs, and dealing with challenging situations. Because Catholics often look to saints for help and inspiration in our lives, there are also profiles of patron saints for Catholic homeschoolers.
In addition, it can be beneficial to see what homeschooling life really looks like. Several Catholic homeschoolers have generously provided “A Day in the Life” profiles, so you can see what life might be like as a homeschooler. I’m so thankful to Alexandra Resch, Caitlan Rangel, Lauren Giordano, Samantha Stephenson, and Jen Smarsh for sharing a glimpse into their homeschool lives.
At the end of the book, there is a list of homeschool curriculum resources and recommended books for further reading.
