Walking with Jesus this Holy Week means pausing during these sacred days and remembering where He was and accompanying Him in what He was doing for us.
Day 1: Holy Thursday
On this special day, contemplate the great gift He gave us before His death in the institution of the Holy Eucharist and the priesthood.
Remember the Holy Communions that you have prepared for and received with reverence. Savor the memory of communing there with Him.
Resolve to prepare more carefully, reverently receive, and give proper thanksgiving for Him in this most Holy Sacrament. Then, pray for all the needs of our priests, and that God would give us many holy priests.
Day 2: Good Friday
This day can be a deep remembering and empathy for Jesus’ pain and His persistence. Ponder His determination to help us despite the suffering He knew would come, and His willingness to faithfully obey our Father to the end. His faithfulness extended beyond just physical, to include social, emotional, and mental torture for our sakes.
His inability to give up on us even when we give up on ourselves, is an awesome thing. Pause and sit in that awe and gratitude.
Day 3: Holy Saturday
On this quiet Holy Saturday, experience the great silence over the earth as Jesus lay in the tomb.
In the words of an unnamed ancient writer in the Liturgy of the Hours:
“…There is a great silence on earth today, a great silence and stillness. The whole earth keeps silence because the King is asleep.”
Sit in that silence with Him. Put yourself in the tomb and let Him hold you there.
He is still all powerful and still in control. He knew this would happen. He allowed it for our greater good, our very salvation.
In the stillness of the tomb, you are safe to think and ponder what all His workings in your life have been and now could be. Think of all the things in your life that He is allowing for your greater good. He is all good and all powerful.
There is something to learn or maybe some quiet action He wants us to take. Let Him show you as you lie beside Him in the tomb.
